In 1949 George Orwell penned "a dystopian social science fiction" novel entitled 1984. Most certainly at the time it was meant to be a work of pure fiction speaking of totalitarianism, omnipresent government surveillance, perpetual war, destruction of history, and widespread use of propaganda to divide and control the masses. George was off about the year but the book feels more and more of a cautionary tale than a work of science fiction.
